Co-Presenter: Craig Carpentieri, Nancy Penchev

Session Schedule:

Session Description:
At Scheck Hillel Community School in North Miami Beach students have a comprehensive K-12 Technology curriculum developed by the school' technology team. In K-5 the program is based on ISTE standards and developmentally appropriate guidelines. The 6th-12th grade program builds on the foundations began in the K-5 curriculum and extends into a two track program, one focusing on technology and the other focusing on design. Students in the upper grades program focus on solving real world problems within the technology and design framework.

In this poster session, presenters will share the curriculum designed to meet the needs of 21st century learners. They will provide attendees with information on how they can develop their own technology curriculum or adapt the program created by Hillel.

Session Title: Create "Uncommon" Reports with Free iPad App (AS2015)
Session Designation: Aspire Session
Focus Area: Mobile Learning

Primary Presenter: Nancy Penchev

Session Schedule:
Date: Thursday, January 22, 2015
Time: 11:00-11:20 a.m.
Location: Makers' Hub - Main Concourse

Session Description:
In this session attendees will learn to use an iPad APP to create the "uncommon" report. This APP is a fun and easy way for students to create a presentation that is different from the normal PowerPoint, Prezi, or stand and talk. The APP allows users to create unique characters and settings, bringing a new dimension to the old, boring presentation. The APP is free, has an easy learning curve, and can be used with students in Kindergarten and above. During the 20 minute session, attendees will download the APP, learn the options, create an example presentation, and brainstorm ways to use this APP in the classroom for vibrant learning experiences.

Session Title: Motivating Readers Through Accelerated Reader (PS1034)
Session Designation: Poster
Focus Area: Web 2.0 and Digital Teaching Tools

Primary Presenter: Nancy Penchev

Session Schedule:
Date: Thursday, January 22, 2015
Time: 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Location: Exhibit Hall aisle 600

Session Description:
Students in today's world are more interested in texting, watching tv, and talking with friends than reading. Accelerated Reader is a program from Renaissance Learning that allows students to take tests on books they have read. Students get a score for their tests, find out the number of words they have read, and get points. This program has not only helped my teachers find the correct level for the books students should read, it has become a boost to our over all reading program. Students are clamoring for books, begging to test, and crowing about their accomplishments. From special ed to gifted students, all of our kids are involved and reading. We have monthly and quarterly challenges set up around themes that the kids enjoy and help plan. Low cost rewards and parties are held to celebrate the successes. Visitors to this session will get data from my school, ideas for challenges and activities, and will find out how to become connected to AR.
