Below you will find resources for Literacy Days we have enjoyed!

Around the World Literacy Day
We polled students to determine where our kids' families came from. For the grade level groups we selected the top countries and developed literacy activities around that country. Each room was decorated for the country, students heard fairytales/folktales/myths/legends from the country and did an activity based on that location. Students dressed up in native costumes or wore shirts that represented the country. Students paid $1 to dress up and the money went toward our scholarship fundraiser. Below are a few of the activities.

Dr Seuss: Morals and Lessons
Dr Seuss has woven morals and lessons into most of his stories. On this literacy day we selected major themes and connected them to books, math, science, art, and more. Below you will find the activities. Each book also had a teacher giving a personal connection to the theme.

Constitution Day
September 17 is Constitution Day and schools who receive federal moneys are required to teach an hour on this day about the Constitution. We created a literacy day around this theme. Below you will find the activities completed and some suggestions for teachers to incorporate on their own.

Mystery/Pirate Literacy Day
Students took a bigger role in the ideas and planning last year, and this day was a result of their sharing. Students dressed up as pirates or problem solvers (detectives and police men). We had a visit from CSI detectives, had a qr code scavenger hunt, solved the mystery of who borrowed the turtle from 3C, and went on treasure hunts.

Poetry Field Day
To celebrate poetry month we had a poetry field day. We made poetry notebooks, played sports based on poems, read poems, and wrote poems about sports. During the month poems would "appear" in random places, like the lunch room, bathroom, water fountain, nurse's office, science lab, etc.

Math Literacy Day
We wanted to show kids math can be fun! So we created literacy day around math concepts. We read and played with fractions, numbers, money, and more. Another literacy day with math involved an author visit from David Schwartz. Below are the math activities and books.

Sports/Ruach Literacy Day  http://sportsruachday.weebly.com/
Students asked for another day of sports literacy, so we created Sports/Ruach day. This day was to engage students in reading with both fiction and nonfiction books about sports. After the books were read different math, literacy, art, and music activities took place.  A key component of this day was the RUACH or spirit piece. We reinforced sportsmanship, both as a player and a fan. We discussed not giving up, trying our best, and working as a team. Below you will find the sports with books and activities. I only listed the books we had on hand, there a TONS of books to use!
