Girls Building S.T.E.A.M.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math

For 2016 information please visit http://girlsbuildingsteam.weebly.com/

Girls Building S.T.E.A.M. is an after school club for girls in grades 3-5. We play around with Science, Technology, Art, and Math in order to show girls how much fun these subjects can be.
Here is an article from our school about our first meeting.

Meeting one- Kitchen Science
Marshmallow towers, Oobleck, Chemical reactions with vinegar and baking soda

Meeting two- Maker
Taking old toys and electronic equipment to plan and build new stuff

Maker class
We had an amazing time in our Maker Class this week. The girls were provided with many new and used items and encouraged to create something new. Items on the maker table included art supplies, slinkies, a teapot, toy cars, alarms, tools, and much more. Final products included sukkah decorations, an animal observation tool, an alarm, and other amazing stuff. Many thanks to Doug Sands for helping us figure out our stuff!

Here are some pictures and student reactions:

We took apart toys and household things, like a teapot, and made new things like a bug magnifying teapot. I also figured out how to use a door and window alarm. I took apart a car, too. Malvina

I made a calcutimer3000 using a timer and a calculator and tape. It was very fun. Rachel

I made a light up decoration for my sukkah. Ariella

Class 3- Making Music
In this class we met with our Director of Fine Arts and toured the light and sound booth of our auditorium. The girls got to explore the backstage and work the lights and sounds in the booth! Then we went to meet with our Music teacher Ms Shapanka who had the girls build a record player. They were given a record glued to a lazy susan, a cup, a needle, paper, and tape. They quickly worked together to create a phonograph. Their faces upon hearing the sound was amazing!
Class 4- What do cheeseballs and your breath have to do with Science?
In this class we studied air and wind using paper airplanes and cheeseballs. First we folded paper to see how far we could make it fly. We used construction paper for one plane and copier paper for the other. The girls had to "do something" to the paper to make it fly. They ended up making planes, while I made a paper ball. Mine went further and after the complaints that I cheated...we discussed why my ball went further than their folded planes.
And then the cheeseballs came out! We had cups taped to the end of a table. Two students per team lined up on the ends of the tables. Each team tried to blow cheeseballs into the cup on the opposite side of the table. If a cheeseball fell off the games paused while it was trashed and then resumed. After the team competition, we also had individual contests. The cheeseballs taught the girls about air pressure and how hard/soft air affects items. It was a delicious lesson!
January 2015- Topic: HEAT
Students experimented with HEAT to make Art. We had different heat sources, flashlights, hair dryer, and shop lights. The girls discussed which lights would melt the crayons to create art. Then, they taped a crayon to a paper and experimented. Once they determined the hairdryer would work best, everyone started their own artwork.

When I started Girls Building S.T.E.A.M. it was based on a commercial by Verizon (see top of page). Now I am inspired again!

February 2015 - Topic: Floors
http://www.projectpixelpress.com/floors/

The girls were super excited about designing their own video games. We didn't have time to completely design the games, so they took them home to finish. We also designed one on the APP and played it...so much fun!
